2023 Bear

Pinot Noir  // coming soon

This is the pinot from Terrie’s vineyard in Yoncalla, a single acre that is probably 15-20 years old and ungrafted. There is no trellising system, and when I first saw it, most of the vines were staked with pvc pipes and it was in rough shape. It has responded really well to consistent pruning and spraying, and I’m essentially head training both the pinot and the chardonnay. With Terrie’s help we have restaked the wines with wood and some metal posts, and because most of them are trained to 4 ish feet, they resemble small trees. I think of this as the Montessori vineyard, where the vines are encouraged to be their essential selves.

2022 Welcome to the Dacha

Pinot Noir  //  $25

The main red from Lewisburg is a blend of all three clones: Pommard, 115, and Wadensville. I love this three acre vineyard because there is so much variation in soil, topography, sun exposure, water, etc., and this wine is really a sum of all the parts. The pinot is on a steep southern-facing slope, with more moisture and organic matter on the eastern edge, and across the belly of the vineyard, while the western part where the wadensville is planted tends to be rocky and drier, sprinkled with madrone seedlings. The wine was fermented in a concrete tank, with a mix of whole cluster and destemmed, and aged in neutral oak and steel. The result is intense berry fruit and a clear gritty structure with more grip than last vintage.

The Message

Pinot Noir  //  $52

This wine is from the Applegate House Vineyard, also in Yoncalla. The Charles Applegate House is the oldest continuously owned house in Oregon, and feels straight out of the 1850s. It is a historic landmark and casual museum. The three acre vineyard was planted about 8 years ago by Jessica Applegate and sits on a slope above the house. This vineyard has had a little bit of a rough go early on, and is still coming into production. There was a tiny amount of Pinot in 2021, but what it lacks in volume it makes up for in character. This wine is well structured with softer tannins than Terrie’s pinot. The fruit is dark and slightly brooding, and I think the wine has an almost bloody, iron note that pairs well with red meat.

Zapoi

Pinot Noir rosé  //  $23

Rosé is back! This year's pink is similar to last year's, thanks to an early labor day weekend pick. It is  easy to drink and has a nice strawberries and cream refrain. Online rosé orders limited to 6 bottles.

Awake

Gewurztraminer + Riesling  //  $34

Co-ferment of  riesling and ggewurztraminer from Two Rivers Farm, in Aurora OR, farmed in collaboration with  Jess Miller of Little Crow Vit. Two rivers has one acre of vines planted in 1977. There is pinot noir, chardonnay, rielsing, gewurtz, and some muscat. The community at Two Rivers follows the teachings of George Gurdjieff, an Armenian philosopher of the late 19th and early 20th century. He proposed, among other things, that most people wander through life in a kind of hypnotic sleep, but that it is possible to 'awake' with a combination of study and labor.

Limousine 2022

white blend   //  $30

This is the white from Lewisburg Vineyards. It is a blend of 80% chardonnay and the rest a mix of aromatic varietals from the back, west-facing slope of the property, where there are two rows each or riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot blanc, and pinot gris. All grapes were pressed together and fermented, then aged, in neutral oak for 18+ months. The result is nice texture from the extended lees contact, but plenty of acidity to cut through the richness.
